New Local MP John Whitby Officially Opens Upgraded Supported Housing at Pioneering Community Initiative River Network Charity in Derbyshire

Derbyshire, [7/7/24] – In a significant show of support for local community initiatives, newly elected Member of Parliament John Whitby officially opened upgraded housing at River Network Charity, a leading organisation in Derbyshire recognised for its innovative housing projects. The charity has recently expanded its efforts to include houses of multiple occupancy, providing stable accommodation for up to six and seven residents. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance community welfare and combat crime in the area.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, MP John Whitby expressed his admiration for the initiative, stating, “It’s inspiring to see how River Network Charity is not only providing housing but also creating a supportive environment where residents can thrive. The housing projects implemented by River Network Charity have demonstrated remarkable success in reducing crime rates in and around their facilities. A representative from the charity highlighted the comprehensive approach taken to ensure the well-being of residents: “This has been achieved through robust referral and interviewing processes and clear disciplinary measures around anti-social behaviour. This framework allows for exceptional support plans that include involvement, training, move-on planning, budgeting, food preparation, and enhanced life skills. We also emphasise media and leadership training as essential components of community development solutions. Honouring and valuing excellence in partnership working is crucial, and we recognise that new protocols must be established as past methods simply were not effective.”

One resident, Carol, shared her transformative experience, saying, “I had no self-worth or value, and past housing experiences made things worse. Now, I have so much confidence, and I’m helping lead and contribute to my community.” Carol’s joy and newfound confidence were palpable during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, where she proudly celebrated her journey.

Jill Eckersley, another key figure at River Network Charity, added, “I’m so proud of what’s being achieved here. It’s an honour to witness hope, lives, and families being restored through our collective efforts.”
